How big do corn snakes get?
Short answer: adults run 3 to 5 feet long. Big enough to be impressive, small enough to handle solo. That's the whole appeal.
Hatchlings start around 8 to 12 inches — basically a fancy shoelace with opinions. Most of the growing happens in the first two to three years, and they'll keep filling out after that. Males often run slightly smaller than females, but there's plenty of overlap.
A few things people get wrong about corn snake size:
- Feeding more doesn't make a bigger snake. It makes a fatter snake. Power-feeding is a health problem, not a growth strategy. Stick to the schedule: hatchlings every 5–7 days, adults every 14–21.
- Small tank doesn't keep them small. It keeps them stressed. They grow anyway, just unhappily. The 40-gallon minimum stands no matter what.
- Five feet sounds big until you hold one. They're slender — an adult corn snake is lighter than your average house cat and dramatically easier to find homes for.
Compared to the snakes people are scared of, corn snakes are the manageable middle: substantial enough to feel like a real snake, calm enough to drape over your shoulders while you answer emails.
